Dr. Nora Volkow, the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), posted this week on the possible implications of coronavirus on those with certain substance abuse disorders.
"Because it attacks the lungs, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 could be an especially serious threat to those who smoke tobacco or marijuana or who vape," Dr. Volkow wrote.
As noted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of the groups at higher risk for more severe COVID-19 symptoms are those with serious underlying medical conditions, including those with chronic lung disease or asthma.
