How to Clean a Cloth Face Mask for Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic

With the recommendation to wear a cloth face mask in public, you might be wondering how often and how you should be cleaning your face mask.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "A washing machine should suffice in properly washing a face covering."

However, there is no specific recommendation for how often a cloth face mask should be washed. The CDC only notes that it should be "routinely washed." Various experts online have suggested frequencies such as after every wear, after every two wears, once a week or when visibly soiled.

The CDC recommends wearing a face mask any time you're in public settings where other social distancing measures might not be able to be upheld (such as in a grocery store or a pharmacy).
